Vietnam hosts 44th ADB Annual Meeting ADB for the first time

The 44th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Asian Development Bank opens at the National Convention Center in Hanoi on May 3, which focusing on major issues such as food security, overcoming the middle-income trap, sustainable development, and climate change.

 The event takes place at a special time as Vietnam has officially joined the middle income country group after 25 years of renovation. The Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung will deliver a keynote speech at the event.

 

Some 3,600 delegates are attending the meeting including government leaders, governors of central banks, and ministers of economics and finance from 67 ADB member countries. Representatives from international financial institutions, private sector of world-leading financial groups and multi-national corporations, research institutions, non-governmental organizations as well as the national and foreign media will also participate in this annual meeting.

 

According to Deputy Prime Minister cum Chairman of the Vietnam Steering Committee for the Organization of the 44th Annual Meeting of the Asian Development Bank’s Board of Governors, Pham Gia Khiem, the event will provide international and regional policymakers, private sector, financial institutions and social entities with opportunities to discuss various topics relating to the reform of the global economy and the development of Asia.

 

Speaking at a press conference held in Hanoi on May 2, Governor of State Bank of Vietnam Nguyen Van Giau stressed: “The robust economic growth in Asia, especially after the recent global financial crisis, is obviously an evidence for a dynamic Asia. The remarkable recovery of the region mostly reflects the successful reforms and restructuring which have been implemented since the 1997-1998 crisis”.

 

"The strong collaboration has helped the region to deal effectively with the crisis, giving us more confidence in our joint efforts toward a steady, sustainable and fair global development, as well as the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals", Governor Giau added.

 

On the sidelines of the meeting, there will be around 20 seminars and country presentations among those, remarkable seminar on “Asia 2050” will focus on discussing on what the region must do over the next 40 years to sustain the momentum of its remarkable growth in recent decades.

 

A special event that highlights the “Vietnam landmark” at this year's annual meeting is the “Vietnam Day Program”, according to which there will be a senior business meeting with the participation of Vietnam’s Deputy PM, Ministers, and international speakers.

 

Additionally, seminars and cultural events to introduce investment, trade and tourism opportunities in Vietnam as well as about the history and traditions of the country will be organized.

 

The 44th ADB annual meeting is a good opportunity for Vietnam to promote the image of a history and culture-rich country, an emerging and dynamic economy with increasing influence in the region, as assessed by ADB President Haruhiko Kuroda: “Vietnam is a very strong partner in the region’s development”.

 

As one of 67 ADB members, Vietnam has benefited from some 100 projects in infrastructure development, social welfare, healthcare and poverty alleviation with commitments of an estimated 10 billion USD over the past 18 years, since the two parties resumed relations in 1993.

 

The hosting of the ADB regular meeting is another evidence of the nation’s drastic growth in both material foundations which meet international standards and experience in hosting major regional events.
